Here is Sarah McLelland’s account of the Bike Ride Leader Training that happened last Saturday…
The sky was clear, the birds were tweeting in the trees and the Heatons got cycle training. The SLH Lead Rider training session was a sellout within 56 hours (faster than The Rolling Stones!)…..
SLH were delighted that so many people were prepared to give up their Saturday to undertake cycle training to be able to help out at SLH bike rides this summer. Under the expert tuition of Will and Sarah from Bike Right the willing volunteers started off the day with a theory session about safe cycling and cycling in groups. The session covered everything from route planning and risk assessments to legislation and cycle helmets and was essential to cover before we headed out on Heatons roads.
Then after a short refreshment stop – thank you Kro for fabulous butties – we were ready to head outside. Will and Sarah made sure our bikes were roadworthy by teaching us the “M check” whcih will be an essential part of SLH bike rides in the future. The M Check makes sure that your bike is road safe and importantly that the brakes work and you will stop in the event of an emergency – crucial if you are going to ride in a group.
Checks over and it was time to hit the road. We practiced being the “frontman”, the “Sweeper” and how to “snake”. We also re-enforced left and right turns, tricky junctions and group signals to make sure that everyone on our bike rides will be relaxed and able to enjoy the cycling while we worry about the routes, junctions and other traffic.
The day was a huge success and to much relief all 12 participants passed and were awarded certificates from Bike Ride.
Now we’re really looking forward to getting the Heatons cycling this Summer!
